Chase Utley and the all-time greats

One more bit on Chase Utley

The all-time second base leaders in fWAR per game, with at least 1000 games played, since 1871:

2 Eddie Collins 2826 12037 134.2 0.0475
3 Chase Utley 1109 4778 50.6 0.0456
4 Jackie Robinson 1382 5802 62.7 0.0454
5 Nap Lajoie 2480 10460 108.2 0.0436
6 Joe Gordon 1566 6536 67.2 0.0429

9 Bobby Grich 2003 8220 74.1 0.0370
10 Frankie Frisch 2311 10100 78.8 0.0341

And the all-time second base leaders in fWAR per plate appearance, with at least 4500 plate appearances, since 1871:

  Name G PA fWAR fWAR/G fWAR/PA
1 Rogers Hornsby 2259 9475 134.9 0.0597 0.0142
2 Eddie Collins 2826 12037 134.2 0.0475 0.0111
3 Jackie Robinson 1382 5802 62.7 0.0454 0.0108
4 Chase Utley 1109 4778 50.6 0.0456 0.0106
5 Nap Lajoie 2480 10460 108.2 0.0436 0.0103
6 Joe Gordon 1566 6536 67.2 0.0429 0.0103
7 Joe Morgan 2645 11329 108 0.0408 0.0095
8 Bobby Grich 2003 8220 74.1 0.0370 0.0090
9 C. Gehringer 2323 10237 88.1 0.0379 0.0086
10 Gil McDougald 1336 5395 44.2 0.0331 0.0082

A terribly simplistic analysis that speaks volumes about Chase’s place among the game’s greatest ever.

It remains to be seen whether Utley can perform at a high level when he makes his return in 2012 and beyond. His chronic knee issues certainly damage his chances of occupying a spot on these lists both a few years from now and when he retires. Regardless, he should (and will) go down as one of the greatest second basemen in MLB history.
